A well fitted therapeutic shoe with moldable inserts can reduce the risk of foot ulcers or other complications because they can: · Protect feet against trauma and provide adequate space to prevent callus and ulcer formation caused by pressure or rubbing from shoes that are too tight. · Provide adequate room to allow for swelling and deformities of the foot without creating pressure points. · Cushion high pressure areas of the foot and appropriately support the entire foot during ambulation with custom-moldable inserts. · Allow airflow within the shoe to keep feet as cool and dry as possible. · Appropriately support feet with deformities such as hammer toe, bunions, partial amputations, etc.
What does a diabetic shoe have that a walking shoe doesn’t? |
Popular running and athletic shoes may look great and feel great (initially), but they are not designed for the needs of elderly diabetic residents in senior care facilities |
“Just say no to Reeboks!” |

Why diabetic shoes are better than athletic or walking shoes |

Firm heel with deep padded heel cup offers comfort and support |
Special outsole provides great stability; provides traction on all surfaces without sticking on carpet. Rounded sole at heel and toe discourage shuffling gait |
Shoe can be machine washed to handle soiling from incontinence, food, outdoor use. |
Deep toe box allows for a full length heel-to-toe custom insert; accommodates foot abnormalities |
Air holes ventilate shoe and allow foot to receive air circulation |
Specially formulated neoprene contours to patient’s foot shape; stretches to accommodate swelling |
Velcro enclosure with wide opening; easier to place foot into shoe |
